Dr Fahmida Khatun is the Research Director and Head of Research at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). She has accomplished Masters and PhD in Economics from the University College London (UCL). Prior to joining CPD she worked as a Research Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies; as an Environment Specialist for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); as an Economist for the USAID Mission in Bangladesh. She taught economics at universities in Bangladesh and England. She was a Visiting Fellow at the Christian Michelsen Institute (CMI), Norway in 1994. She received fellowship of the Asia Foundation and conducted research at the Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET), Korea in 2012.

Dr Khatun sits regularly in various policy making bodies of the government. She was a Director of Janata Bank Limited during 2008-2011, the second largest state owned bank of Bangladesh. She is currently a Director of the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Foundation of Bangladesh. Dr Khatun was a member of several government bodies including the following: Advisory Committee on Services of the Ministry of Commerce; Expert Committee on Identifying the Environmental Goods in Bangladesh, Ministry of Environment and Forest; National Steering Committee on Evaluation of the Implementation of Paris Declaration, Phase II, Aid Effectiveness Unit, Economic Relations Divisions. She was a member of the government delegation to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) Third Preparatory Meeting and Rio+20 Conference in 2012 in Brazil. She also attended the Informal Meeting on the Zero Draft of the Outcome Document of UNCSD in New York as a representative of the Government of Bangladesh.

Dr Khatun delivers lectures at selective top institutes of Bangladesh. Some of the pre-eminent ones include National Defence College, Defence Services and Staff College, Institute of Business Administration and Brac University. She is invited to speak on macroeconomic situation and budgetary issues at various standing committees of the members of the national parliament of Bangladesh.

Dr Khatun has undertaken research for several international organizations including the Harvard Business School, Commonwealth Secretariat, Overseas Development Institute, UNEP, FAO, DFID, Oxfam GB, UNDP, North-South Institute of Canada, Adelaide University, International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development and the Asian Development Bank. Her areas of interest include macroeconomic growth and stability, aid effectiveness, aid for trade (AfT), international trade and WTO issues, environment and climate change, green economy, and gender economics. She has several publications to her credit at home and abroad. Selected Publications

Dr Khatun played key roles in organizing a number of important international seminars and events. Some of these include: Trade and Development Symposium on Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Hong Kong (December 2005) and in Geneva (December 2009) during the WTO’s Ministerial meetings, and in Istanbul during the Fourth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (UNLDC IV) (May 2011); the International Civil Society Forum on LDCs (in Dhaka, October 2005); International Civil Society Forum on Advancing LDC Interests in the Fifth WTO Ministerial (in Dhaka, May 2003).

Dr Khatun regularly writes for newspapers and magazines at home and abroad and speaks on economic issues in the national and international media including the BBC World Service Television and Al-Jazeera Television. She was a regular contributor to the BBC Bangla at the BBC World Service during 1991-96 in London. She hosted popular talk shows in the national televisions on economic issues. Dr Khatun was awarded ‘Anonnya Shirsho Dosh’ (Best Ten) prize in 2009, by a national magazine titled Anonnya for her contribution to economic research in Bangladesh.
