The programme titled Eradication of Poverty in South Asia through the Empowerment of the Poor is being implemented by the CPD, a partner institution of South Asia Centre for Policy Studies (SACEPS). Core support for the programme was received by SACEPS from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. The study, built around a programme of research, dialogue and focus group discussions (FGDs) was initiated in 2004, and is led by Professor Rehman Sobhan, Chairman, CPD. The programme is designed to address poverty across South Asia and is being implemented in five countries of the region -   Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

As part of this programme, a large number of papers/monographs covering country and thematic studies have been completed which have served as inputs to the final report. A substantial number of dialogues and FGDs were also convened at the national level which included discussions with slum dwellers, landless labour, political leaders, civil society leaders, etc. The dialogue process which informed this programme culminated in a South Asian regional Seminar organised by CPD-SACEPS, in Dhaka during 12-13 October 2008, where a draft of the overview report of the research study and reports of the country studies were presented to a gathering of regional and national experts. Based on comments from this regional Seminar, a final report was prepared and presented at an International Conference organised by SACEPS-CPD in partnership with Poverty Practice, Bureau of Development Policy, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), New York, in New Delhi during 17-18 December 2008. The Conference was addressed, among others, by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and Nobel Laureate Professor Amartya Sen.

When completed in 2009 the study outputs will include an overview volume on final outcome of the work, a volume on Bangladesh country studies, four monographs on other four country studies, two thematic monographs, reports on 16 dialogues and FGDs held in Bangladesh, and the reports of the Dhaka and Delhi Conferences. Some of these outputs have been published in 2008. The final report titled Challenging the Injustice of Poverty in South Asia: Agendas for Inclusive Development authored by Professor Rehman Sobhan, which is the overview research report originating from the project, is currently being edited by Sage for publication.
